Top 10 Breakfast Spots in Canberra

If you don't think your day has truly started until you've had that first sip of coffee, and you'd argue that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, here at Avenue Hotel Canberra, we're on the same wavelength. So, we've compiled a list of our favourite spots for brunching here in Canberra.

Pollen

Set idyllicly amongst the Australian National Botanic Gardens, Pollen's brunch menu may be short, but it truly packs a punch. They've got all bases covered, from the classic Eggs Benedict, to something a little different, their Organic Breakfast, including chickpeas, zatar, eggplant and fried basil. We're sold. Plus, you couldn't get a much more relaxed location. And their furnishings? Next level, with to die for textiles by local, Juanita Flett.

Chatterbox

Located in the heart of Belconnen, Chatterbox is known for it's coffee and generous, to say the least, serving sizes... hello, decent serves of avo! The menu features something we never knew we needed, but love to have the option of, the choice of half and full serves of most dishes on the breakfast menu! Let's be honest though, we're still going to go for the full serve, because why not. Although Chatterbox may be slightly tucked away, this doesn't stop the crowds. We'd suggest getting in early on the weekends, but with ample seating inside and out, expect to be seated quickly. Plus, if you're looking for a place that'll happily accommodate the kids, this is it!

Little Oink

Brightening up the previously quiet Cook shops, Little Oink offers an inventive breakfast menu, with witty names to match. From 'take these broken wings', a buttermilk fried chicken burger, to 'parlez vous francais toast', yep, you guessed it, French Toast, no matter your craving, there's seriously something for everyone (there's even bacon schnitzel...)! In an adorable setting that is perfectly kitsch, we can assure you that your next visit to Little Oink won't be your last...

Local Press

A real favourite amongst Canberran's, Local Press on the Kingston Foreshore has impressed from day one. Offering fresh and natural foods, the modern twist they place on each dish, plus their efforts in utilising local produce wherever possible, is what truly makes Local Press stand out from the rest. Opt for one of their all day breakfast options (we recommend the savoury pancake, to which we like to add Box Gum ham & avocado), or build your own breakfast. If you're looking for a place that your furry friend can accompany you, look no further! They'll even bring your pup their very own water bowl!

RYE

Sat along the slightly quiter end of the ever-thriving Lonsdale Street, RYE Cafe is beautifully simplistic in its menu, an ethos which is mirrored throughout the cafe. Serving all day breakfast, RYE's offering of non-fussy food is a breath of fresh air. Take their RYE breakfast board for example, which serves up charred grapefruit, sourdough, butter, citrus jam, hard cheese and a boiled egg. So simple, so delicious, yet still so Instagrammable... because that matters these days, right? And, if you're in the mood for a sneaky morning beverage, why not grab a Mimosa, or a Bloody Mary, to really get the day started!

Sweet Bones Bakery

One of the original cafes of Braddon, Sweet Bones takes vegan food to the next level, with their inventive creations and the all-round cool, rustic vibe that fills the cafe. Offering all day breakfast, with options like the big breakfast, with coconut bacon, tofu scramble and hummus, and the sweet bones short stack, the prettiest dish to grace the menu, in our opinion! Plus, with a mouth-watering variety of sweet treats, from coconut brownies to cinnamon and sugar pretzels, you'll be hard pressed to walk out empty handed!

Teddy Pickers

Located in the picturesque suburb of Campbell, Teddy Pickers offers an all day menu with some killer breakfast options. We love the way they've spun classic dishes... Hello french toast with fresh mango, mango sorbet, lime & milk crumb! Their presentation is impeccable, and their interior, envy-inducing. They've got a dedicated childrens menu, and, for the time poor, a takeaway fridge chock-a-block with delicious things, ranging from hummus salads to chai pudding. Note: do not leave without trying the 'Teddy's Hash Brown'. So. Good.

The Knox

Located at the Watson shops, The Knox is known for its industrial interior, delectable cake display and generous servings. All of the usual suspects are on offer, eggs benedict, pancakes, and the humble bacon and egg roll, which sit perfectly alongside dishes like brekkie tacos, with braised ham hock, cabbage, avocado, salsa & taco chips, for those who are after something a little different. If you're bringing the kids, there is a dedicated 'Little Knox' play area to keep them entertained.

Tilleys Devine Cafe & Gallery

A true Canberran icon, Tilleys is located at the Lyneham shops and has been a favourite of Canberran's for over 30 years. Highly regarded for its warm atmosphere and live music scene, we'd forgive you for feeling as though you'd been transported to a laneway cafe in Paris, thanks to the dark, lush vibes in the cafe. Head in for breakfast, find yourself a booth and order from their extensive breakfast menu, with options from lemon and ricotta hotcakes (our pick!) to chilli & fetta scrambled eggs, or the dish of the moment, a smoothie bowl. The coffee here is fantastic, and we hear that the Tilley's famous hot chocolate is a must try!
