DAY ONE
Lunch
You can’t start anything on an empty stomach. Indulge in a three course menu at Water’s Edge, perfectly situated on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin and minutes from the National Gallery. Enjoy cool white decor and panoramic windows with sweeping views across Lake Burley Griffin and down Anzac Parade.
Afternoon
First cab off the rank is to head to the National Gallery of Australia to see the painting that changed the art world forever, Claude Monet’s Impression, Sunrise.
Travelling to the southern hemisphere for the first time, Impression, Sunrise is accompanied by a collection of Monet works from the Museé Marmottan Monet in Paris.
From waterlilies to seascapes, from city and harbour scenes to rural landscapes, discover the beauty of natural light, colour and feeling moments captured by Impressionist Masters.
A meditation on a moment that defined Impressionism, the exhibition features key impressionist artists – Turner, Boudin, Sisley and Morisot – who created alongside Monet and inspired some of his finest works.
At the National Gallery of Australia you can also discover Australian art, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, Asian art and European and American art amongst their collection of more than 160,000 works of art. Wander through the Art of the Indian Subcontinent Gallery for the largest collection of art, sculptures and textiles in the region outside of India. Be sure to visit the sculpture garden which is home to a collection of avant-garde, industrial large-scale sculptures in a tranquil setting.
Dinner
Marble & Grain offers a true gastronomic journey and dynamic delight for the senses. The menu that offers a wide variety of incredible, succulent choices, from the finest local produce and the most phenomenal steaks; including our signature dish, the Butcher’s Board - A carnivore’s treat of ‘Travale Farm’ venison sausages, baby lamb ribs, grilled sirloin steak, bone marrow, chorizo stuffed onion, black pudding, stuffed pepper, and red wine jus.
DAY TWO
Morning
Beaver Galleries is Canberra’s largest privately owned commercial gallery. This well established and highly regarded gallery reflects the national outlook of its home city exhibiting outstanding pieces by contemporary Australian artists. Three spacious galleries, plus a dedicated print room, feature outstanding work by contemporary Australian artists in a range of disciplines including painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics and glass. Also in the gallery complex is a courtyard sculpture garden, a gallery shop with beautifully crafted products by leading Australian designer/makers.
Lunch
theKitchen, located inside Beaver Galleries, provides a unique atmosphere offering a vibrant and creative all-day menu with an emphasis on seasonal, organic and sustainable produce along with a selective wine list focusing on local wineries. theKitchen is ideal for lunch after spending some time after wandering through the gallery.
Afternoon
Your itinerary wouldn’t be complete without a visit to The Gallery of Small Things, Canberra’s tiniest gallery showcasing emerging and established artists. These artists love texture, form and all things fabulous and small. Visitors will see works in textiles, ceramics, paintings, photography, jewellery and print media. They will experience that hygee feeling the Danish love (which loosely translates to 'being cosy') - in a space less than 6 meters square.
Dinner
Indulge at the award winning Monster Kitchen and Bar for a quality dining experience in artisan luxe. The menu charts the season with food that’s great to share.
DAY THREE
Morning
See professional glass artists at work at Canberra Glassworks – Australia’s leading centre for contemporary glass art, craft and design. There is something for everyone from exhibitions by world-class artists, live glassblowing in the Hotshop, or the option to make your own glass paperweight, bird, tumbler or vase or even take introductory glass courses from experts and see their striking exhibitions. Canberra Glassworks is housed in the historic Kingston Power House. Take a self-guided tour and discover some of Canberra’s heritage. This contemporary glass centre is the only one of its kind in Australia.
Lunch
Pomegranate Restaurant, located in Kingston, provides a classic dining experience with a menu that relies on quality and freshness of ingredients without overcomplicating things. A nod to the flavours of Turkey and a penchant for French technique, Pomegranate is a friendly and welcoming space to round out your weekend.
